Thousands of Years of Elderberry History
No less than the Father of Medicine himself, Hippocrates, referred to the Elder plant as his “medicine chest.” The berries are packed with antioxidants and vitamins and have been used since 400 BC for healing purposes. Elderberry is still widely used today for myriad health reasons, including alleviating cold and flu symptoms and reducing inflammation (ref).
Elderberry is currently among the most-used medicinal plants in the world. Nor are the benefits just anecdotal. In fact, antiviral and antimicrobial properties have been found in elderberry extracts, and the Unite States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes the plants as safe.
